What it is

The Franklin Forte Youth, Franklin's dedicated kids paddle. 10mm polypropylene honeycomb core, composite face, US$18 retail, USAPA approved. The cheapest legitimate kids paddle from a real sporting goods brand. Not a toy.

Age fit

Designed for ages 4-8 and that's where it actually fits. Shorter handle, lighter swing weight, smaller face, all sized for small hands and short arms. A 4-year-old can hold it. A 7-year-old gets full use of it. By 9-10 most kids will start to feel cramped on the grip and will benefit from stepping up to the JOOLA Essentials Dash single. The size delta between Franklin Forte Youth and an adult paddle is meaningful, buying an adult paddle for a 5-year-old will ruin their swing technique before it forms.

Build quality

This is the standout for the price. Real polypropylene honeycomb core, not a wood toy. Composite face, not painted plastic. USAPA approved means it's a real paddle, not a Toys R Us beach product. Durability is solid, these survive being dropped, banged, and used as flyswatters between matches. Franklin has been making sports gear forever and the QC reflects that.

Bright colors and youth-friendly graphics help engagement, which matters more than parents realize. A kid who likes the look of their paddle plays more. Safety-wise, standard edge guard, no sharp surfaces, no chemical smell on unboxing.

Bottom line

The right paddle for a 4-8 year old getting started. At US$18 it's effectively a try-and-see purchase, if the kid sticks with it, they'll outgrow the paddle in 1-2 years and you'll buy a JOOLA Essentials Dash or step up to a youth-tournament paddle. If they bounce off pickleball entirely, you're out US$18 instead of US$50+ for an adult starter paddle. For sibling play or family rallies, buy two, they're cheap enough that doubling up doesn't sting.
